Mr S.Illayperuma(1986-1994)

Mr. S. llayperuma, who was born at Uluvitike in Galle, received his education at Richmond from 1947 to 1955. Entering College at Form 1 , he left after quali f ying for admission to the University. During his school days, he was a keen sportsman and also took an active part in many extra-mural activities. He was a member of the College Prefects’ Body in 1955. He represented the school in Football and Athletics and was a member of the English Debating team. He took part in a-host of other activities, specially those with an aesthetic flavour.

He entered Peradeniya University in 1956, passing out with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts in 1959.

He first joined the staff of Richmond in 1963. He again entered Peradeniya University in 1965. After completing his post-graduate Diploma in Education, he re-joined the Richmond staff in 1968 and served until 1971.

During his period as a teacher, he functioned as sectional head in the Advanced Level Arts Section and as Master in Charge of the Library. He gave active support in all aesthetic activities organised in the College.

From 1972 to 1986, he had a long stint as principal of Christ Church College, Baddegama, where he served as an exemplary Principal, winning the love of both students and parents.

Mr. llayperuma assumed duties as Principal of Richmond on 1st January 1987. He headed his old school with distinction until his retirement from the Education Service in 1994.

Mr.llayperuma was the 5th old boy of the school to serve as its Principal. Richmond is fortunate to have had old Richmondites as its head during a considerable portion of its history, as it is only a Richmondite who is best suited to keep alive the noble traditions of Richmond.
