Mr S.Kariyawasam(1973-1977)

A graduate in Science, Mr. S. Kariyawasam first joined the staff of Richmond in 1961. An outstanding teacher, he was able to produce exceptional results in the Maths stream in the 1960s.

He functioned as head of the Science Section under Mr. Welikala, and became vice principal, succeeding Mr. H. D. A. Gunasekera.

He was master-in-charge of cricket from 1967 to 1969 in which year Richmond won the Big Match against Mahinda after a number of years without success.

Mr. Kariyawasam was acting principal for a short time in 1971 after the transfer of Mr. Welikala. Thereafter, he left Richmond and Galle , and served for a few years as principal of Kegalle M. V.

In 1973, he became the third old boy of the school to be appointed principal of Richmond . He continued as principal until the end of 1977.

In 1976, Richmond celebrated her centenary. Mr. Kariyawasam directed the centenary celebrations, including an exhibition and funfair and the publication of a centenary souvenir, with great efficiency.
